Confidence Driving School | Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old does a student have to be to start Driver's Education?

A: The student should be at least 14 1/2 years old to take the classroom portion and 15 1/2 to obtain their instruction permit.

Q: Is there too long of a gap between classroom and the Behind-The-Wheel portion? Will the students forget the information taught in class?

A: No. It is our experience that when a student is active in school, sports or work it is difficult to donate 42 hours (30 classroom, 6 behind the wheel and 6 observing another student driving) to Driver's Ed at one time. By taking the classroom portion during their off season, it allows the student more time to participate in all of their activities. Their driving experience will readily reinforce the knowledge learned in class.

Q: When does the student get their temporary permit?

A: The first week of class is geared toward learning the rules of the road. During the fourth class session, we administer the Wisconsin State written permit test. A passing grade of 80% or higher is needed to qualify. These test results are valid for 12 months after the date of the test. When the student qualifies (passes the test and is at least 15 1/2 years old) a 3001 form (Application for Driver's License) is signed and given to the student. This form is needed to show that the student is or has been enrolled in our Driver's Education program.

Q: What does the student need to bring to the DMV office when applying for a temporary permit?

A: When applying for a temporary permit, the student needs to bring these items:
+ 3001 form signed by Confidence Driving School
+ a certified birth certificate
+ two other forms of identification with a signature
+ a record of his/her social security number
+ $35.00 cash or check (no credit cards)

Q: Where does the student go to apply for the temporary permit?

A: The necessary identification (as listed above) along with a parent or guardian should be taken to one of the following motor vehicle service centers. No appointment is necessary.

Q: How does the student schedule their first behind the wheel section?

A: Once a student receives his/her permit. They must call Confidence Driving School to schedule their first behind the wheel appointment. Please have the permit number and the expiration date available when you call. We strongly suggest that the student drive with one of our instructors before going out with a parent. We find this is beneficial to their training. The student must bring their schedule card with them to their driving lessons. Each future appointment is scheduled in the car with the instructor.
